This is true, however, only to the first few cycles. Moreover, the process has been found to be reversible, so that after the last few cycles, the battery is recharged and discharged indefinitely. This occurs for a number of reasons, most notably as follows:
1. As water is introduced into the porous anode material during charging, when the anode material contacts the electrolyte, more water is electrolytically liberated. This water is then present in the pores of the anode material. PA1 2. As the anode material is discharged, the anode material swells and forces the water out of the pores, thereby facilitating discharge of the electrolyte. PA1 3. The water electrolytically liberated during charging can initiate and accelerate the first chemical reaction of oxidation of the anode material. PA1 1. the electrolytic liberation of water in the anode material during charging has been found to be reversible, i.e., the water in the anode material can be re-induced back into the anode material
